The era around BC saw more than , tons of copper being mined in the so-called Upper Peninsula, in the American state of Michigan. The largest mine was on Isle Royale, an island in Lake Superior, near the Canadian border. Here, there are thousands of prehistoric copper pits, dug thousands of years ago by ancient peoples unknown. WORKING IN THE COPPER MINES The mining frontier added a new dimension to Michigan's population. The dominance of New England stock, so marked in the settlement of the farmer's frontier of southern Michigan, was notably absent in the mining country, although Boston dollars were heavily invested in the copper mines.   The rich copper sulfide ores found in the old stopes of Arizona metal mines have a history of spontaneous combustion of sulfide ore releasing sulfur .

Evidence shows that someone was mining copper in northern Michigan starting around 5, BC. It continued until 1, BC. Around 1, AD mining was restarted and lasted until 1, AD. The largest mine discovered was located on Isle Royale, an island in .   Mining continued throughout the early to midth century, reaching its height in , when Michigan produced over million pounds of copper in one year. Flickr/upnorthmemories As modernization continued throughout the states, the mines slowly lost their influence in the area.

The Shipping of Michigan Copper across the Atlantic in the Bronze Age (Isle Royale and Keweenaw Peninsula, c. BC BC) Summary. Recent scientific literature has come to the conclusion that the major source of the copper that swept through the European Bronze Age after BC is unknown.
